Document detailing oncost men at Cleland Colliery, 1849

‘Oncost men’ was a Scottish term for colliery employees not involved in hewing – removing coal from the coal face – who received a fixed wage. These figures were usually kept separate as hewers would be paid by ‘piece-work’ or weight of coal extracted.
