Airdrie Greenhouse Lodge of Free Gardeners Printing Plate, 1800s

Printing plate for invitation to a general meeting of the Airdrie Greenhouse Lodge of Free Gardeners. Top half depicts coat-of-arms and various Free Gardener symbols. Invitation details all inside a foliage frame. Friendly societies were self-help organisations for working people; providing death and sickness benefits before the creation of the Welfare State. They were organised along trade lines, and were thus the ancestors of trade unions.
