Scotland International Football Shirt, 1939

Worn by Henry (Harry) Pinkerton against the 'Auld Enemy', 2nd December 1939. The game against an England XI at St James' Park, Newcastle, was one of several 'wartime internationals'. It was held to raise funds for the Red Cross and the sides were made of Scottish and English players playing their club football in northern England and Scotland. Harry, from Kilsyth, was 33 and playing for Falkirk at the time.

When he left school he worked as a telegraph boy. At the age of 16, having played for juvenile clubs in Banknock and Dunipace, he signed for Hull City. This was followed by playing for Port Vale and Burnley. In 1939 he was chosen to play for Scotland. For the duration of the war he served in the RAF, afterwards becoming an accountant and playing football part-time for Falkirk, Kilsyth Rangers and Bo'ness United.
