Police Restraint, around 1800 – 1850

Rope cuffs like these were used before steel handcuffs were widely introduced in the mid-19th century. Known as "snitches", they consisted of a large wooden toggle with a loop of cord, which was twisted and tightened around the prisoner’s wrists.
