Sylvan Soap Flakes, about 1950

Sylvan soap flakes were marketed as a multi-purpose household soap, and in the mid-1900s were one of the most popular brands. They could be used for either clothes washing or for dishes.

They contained no soda (sodium carbonate) which was often used in soap as it is effective in creating a lather and breaking down dirt in clothes. However it is quite alkaline and such soaps are more likely to irritate the skin and leave you with red, itchy hands.
