‘Aladdin’ paraffin lamp, Coatbridge, 1930s

‘Aladdin’ were one of the leading oil lamp brands. The wick soaks up paraffin oil which is ignited to create light. The long glass ‘chimney’ helps p the light as well as shielding the flame. Mantle lamps were a simple way of quickly lighting a room. They were portable and easier lit than a gas ceiling light, and were much brighter than candles. This lamp was used at a home in Ellismuir Street, Coatbridge.
