Pilger Mill Rolls, 1960s

These huge rolls are part of the machinery needed to make seamless steel tubes. The tube starts life as a block (or ‘billet’) of steel that is heated and rolled into a long rod (called a ‘round’). The ‘round’ is forced through these rolls at high pressure and pierced through the middle by a tapered rod called a ‘mandrel’ to make the inside of the tube a uniform diameter.

The rolls were part of Mill No.2 which was installed in the Clydesdale Works near Motherwell in the 1960s.
